A royal visit, a letter and a personal recipe collection

Why this dinner?

1959 visit; recipe letter dated January 24, 1960 · Balmoral, Scotland, and Eisenhower’s recipe collection

Eisenhower took cooking seriously enough to keep a recipe collection. His presidential library preserves a beef-stew recipe written for sixty portions, along with a family-size adaptation. A pot of stew was very much within his culinary range.

A second connection comes from his 1959 visit to Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral. She served drop scones and later sent the recipe with a letter dated January 24, 1960. We join those two records in a home menu: a slow beef stew first, then small warm scones with jam. The queen’s scones were part of that visit, not a documented dessert after this stew. Our dinner brings the two together.

What the record supports

The stew is preserved in Eisenhower’s recipe collection. The Balmoral scones and subsequent letter are documented by the National Archives. This combination is our menu.
