A surviving printed bill of fare

Why this dinner?

March 6, 1865 · Washington, D.C.

The printed menu for Lincoln’s presidential inauguration ball is dated March 6, 1865, two days after his second inauguration. The Library of Congress holds the bill of fare. Roast turkey appears among the poultry, with cakes, several ice creams and fruit farther down the page.

A menu tells us what was offered. It does not tell us which dishes Lincoln personally chose. For dinner at home, we take roast turkey and vanilla ice cream from that documented spread, then build a workable meal around them. A boneless turkey breast keeps the roast manageable, and stuffing bakes in its own dish so the bird and bread can each finish properly.

What the record supports

Roast turkey, vanilla ice cream and grapes are named on the ball menu. Herb stuffing, potatoes and our green salad are modern accompaniments.
