A college account and a preserved cake recipe

Why this dinner?

March 5, 1946 · Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri

Truman accompanied Winston Churchill to Westminster College for the visit remembered for the Iron Curtain speech. The college’s account identifies a Callaway ham luncheon before the ceremony. Its Churchill-Truman Day material also preserves the angel food cake recipe associated with local baker Mrs. Roy “Sportie” Anthony and that 1946 visit.

Those records give us a good starting point for a home meal: ham and a light cake, with simple vegetables between them. We use an easy-to-find fully cooked ham, rather than assuming every shop carries Missouri country ham. The cake is our existing home angel-food method, served plain. This is a selection from the day’s food history, not a claim that every component below occupied the same plate.

What the record supports

The ham luncheon and the cake’s connection to the visit are documented separately by Westminster. The glaze, vegetables and cake method below are home adaptations.
