An original picnic menu

Why this dinner?

June 11, 1939 · Top Cottage, Hyde Park, New York

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt entertained King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Hyde Park during the royal visit of June 1939. On June 11, the party ate at Top Cottage. Hot dogs made the headlines, but the surviving menu also lists ham, cold turkey, green salad, rolls and strawberry shortcake.

There is a small detail worth looking at on the original: the weather condition beside the hot dogs has been crossed out. We have kept three items from that menu and turned the picnic into an easy dinner. The shortcake is baked first, the salad waits undressed, and the hot dogs go on last. Even a royal picnic benefits from someone watching the grill.

What the record supports

Hot dogs, green salad and strawberry shortcake all appear on the original menu. The quantities, condiments and biscuit method here are our home versions.
