Presidential culinary histories associate Jackson with leather britches: green beans preserved by drying and cooked with pork. His public table could look very different. Ice cream and cake were served at the White House reception following his 1829 inauguration.

Our beans use fresh green beans and bacon, a quicker route to the smoky, savoury combination. The vanilla ice cream represents the reception’s dessert course. One dish belongs to a domestic food tradition; the other recalls food served at a recorded public event.
