THE STORY ON YOUR PLATE

The chili Obama said he could cook

More about Barack Obama →

The forty-fourth president grew up in Hawaii and built his political career in Chicago.

At the 2012 Kids’ State Dinner, Obama said he could cook chili, and Michelle confirmed it. This beef-and-bean home version follows that personal cooking connection with a flexible family-sized pot.

The president & the table

At the 2012 Kids’ State Dinner, Obama said he could make a good omelet and a very good chili; Michelle backed up the chili claim. This is a personal cooking connection, not simply a dish served by a presidential chef.

What you’ll need

Let’s make it

  1. Soften onion and pepper in oil for 5 minutes. Add beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned and no pink remains.

  2. Add garlic, chili blend and cumin for 1 minute. Stir in tomatoes, beans and stock.

  3. Simmer for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick. The beef should reach 71°C / 160°F.

  4. Season to taste and serve with rice or bread.
